Welcome to the website of Bydand Silks!

We are a small hobby kennel located in East central Florida.
Our Silk Dog breeding program has been carefully designed over many generations
to consistently produce healthy, happy, well-socialized puppies
especially suited for active families searching for an outgoing, odorless, low-shedding
hypoallergenic family dog in a compact and elegant little  package.

In 2011, the Havana Silk Dog is not "just another name for a Havanese", although that may have been true at one time.
Today's Silk is a "Designer Dog", a deliberate recreation of a small breed known to exist many centuries ago throughout the Caribbean region, with a distinct "look" all its own.
And our puppies are registered exclusively with the Havana Silk Dog Association of America. Why?
Well, the most obvious reason is because the HSDAA is the only registry in the world that actually recognizes and registers Havana Silk Dogs! And HSDAA only registers pups whose parents have been certified by their organization, as opposed to just registered with them.

Is there a difference? Absolutely. Although few people realize it, most registries will register any litter as long as both parents are  registered with them, with absolutely no regard for the quality or health of the parent dogs. In fact, AKC includes the following stunning statement on its own website:

"AKC registration does not indicate the health, quality or value of a dog.
AKC registration simply identifies the dog as offspring of a known registered sire and dam."

The Havana Silk Dog Association of America, on the other hand, requires that the parents be certified in addition to being simply registered before they will register a litter of puppies. This certification  requires a formal evaluation of breed type and soundness, DNA verification of parentage, and results of specific health-screening registered with OFA.
No other canine registry in the world requires this of any breed, although you'd think if they really cared about the health and well-being of dogs they would.
The HSDAA Registry maintains the highest standards  for health, soundness, breed type and accuracy of its stud book in the entire world of purebred dogs, and HSDAA registration says a lot about  "the health, quality and value of a dog" registered with them. So.... why would we want to register our dogs anywhere else?

There is no doubt that along with a good temperament, good health is a huge consideration when choosing a new canine family member. This accounts in no small measure for the explosive popularity of hybrids like Puggles, Labradoodles, and Goldendoodles, who are perceived as healthier than purebreds.
And we agree 100%. In fact, we quite like Puggles and Doodles -  they're attractive, generally have great temperaments, are good with kids, and if produced from health-screened animals, are often healthier than their "parent breeds". So are Havana Silks!

The Havana Silk is not a hybrid, but like the Puggle and the Doodles, it is a "Designer Dog", no doubt about it. That's not a bad thing, nor is it a paricularly new phenomenon if you think about it -- virtually all modern dog breeds were designed by man to fulfill a particular purpose, or in the case of a breed like the Pug, simply for a particular "look". And (unless one supports the  Animal Rights philosophy and believes man has no right to breed domestic animals of any kind) both are perfectly acceptable. Very few breeds, unfortunately, have been deliberately designed for robust health or longevity, which is why many intelligent dog lovers have turned to hybrids, and are justified in doing so.

Through careful genetic selection, the Silk was deliberately designed to be a kid-friendly, healthy, long-lived, low-shedding hypoallergenic dog that would not tip the scales at much over 14 pounds...a sort of "micro-doodle" if you will, but without out all the variations in coat, size, and energy level that invariably plague F1 and F2 hybrid crosses.

Because we have been carefully linebreeding for many generations, Bydand puppies are extremely consistent even within the Silk breed itself. We have very little variation in adult size, coat, color and temperament, so the new owner knows pretty much what to expect as his puppy matures. All our breeding dogs fall within 9 to 10 1/2 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 10 and 12 lbs, as did all their parents and grandparents. We have never produced an oversized 20 lb Silk, nor are we likely to produce one in the future.

At Bydand, we are totally committed to producing the healthiest puppies possible. We do not cut corners. NO dog is used for breeding until it has passed ALL the health-screening requirements for HSDAA certification and the results registered with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals.

This commitment to OFA-registered health-screening has resulted in our own "Bydand Health Database" right within OFA's that now spans several generations, and includes over ten pages of health data on dogs we've produced. It is an open database -- anyone may access it and look around by merely clicking HERE.

Clicking on any dog's name within the database will bring up the results of all health screening on that dog,  on its sire, dam, offspring and siblings. You can see an example of how this works by clicking
HERE, which will take you directly to Sonic's personal OFA page. (The purple CHIC icon after each name certifies that the dog has completed ALL the health-screening required for its breed, and has been registered with the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC).
